Patients Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Regain Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Compared to Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

New research indicates that people who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain shed pounds far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a leading medical journal shows that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals purchasing these drugs should be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery implies a return to starting mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically have a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

The Reason for the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the mechanism of the injections is key to understanding the heightened regain.

The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating much more probable."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the chronic character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have come off the jabs report a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," described an individual.

This challenge is worsened if users have not developed permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Widespread Interest

Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is greater among females than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts caution that while the jabs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined behavioural changes.
