The musician contributes his £25k prize award winnings to independent live spaces

Sam Fender was awarded the prestigious award in October in his hometown

The star has given the complete sum of his twenty-five thousand pound honor cash to the MVT, which works to preserve the United Kingdom's grassroots concert spaces.

Fender was awarded the cheque on 16 October as his latest record People Watching was named the top album of the previous year.

The musician has decided to hand the money over to the trust, in acknowledgment of the crucial part grassroots venues had in his beginning days.

"As an artist would not have achieved what I am doing today if it hadn't been for all the shows I did around the region, and beyond, when I was just getting going," remarked Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these locations have ceased operations – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Recently, top acts like Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all supported the trust in its attempts to support the industry, by adding a modest fee to their ticket prices, which benefits smaller concert halls.

Fender also took part, collecting over £100k on his 2024 arena tour to support thirty-eight local spots across the UK.

The donation assisted spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to difficulties arising from flooding, fire incidents and family tragedies, as well as permit problems, court cases and neighbor objections.

Some locations obtained financial assistance in modernizing infrastructure and sound and lighting systems that helped musicians and audiences.

"The concept that funds from shows in large arenas supports the local stages, where it begins for performers like me, is just common sense," Fender has said.

The musician is not the first artist to give his award winnings to worthy causes.

When they earned the trophy in 1996 for their record the album, lead singer the singer stated that the act would donate their prize money to the charity War Child.

During 2002, rapper and singer she divided her prize across multiple charities, such as the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I donated a grand to the center, to their classes, because I practiced gymnastics when I was younger and they needed new equipment," Ms Dynamite shared with the media.

In recent years, they donated their prize money to the community center that nurtured their band, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

And 1994 winners the group donated their winnings to a charity for MS after a close contact was identified with the illness.

"Winning was ample," said artist the singer. "The cash was the bonus but we could do without the bonus, because we had the cake. So our success touched the lives of others."

In the past week, the trust announced it had protected a couple of grassroots venues in south-east England, by placing them under local control.

One venue in Southampton and The Croft in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues program, which is funded by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who buy "shares" in the venues.
